2025 Academic Year Sees 4 School Closures; EDB Eyes Income Projects
A government announcement has confirmed that four public schools in Mauritius, including one primary school and three secondary schools, will close permanently at the end of the 2025 academic year and will not accept new student registrations for 2026.
Key Closures and Ministerial Announcement
The four institutions slated for closure are the Riche-En-Eau Government School (primary), Marcel Cabon SSS (secondary), Sébastopol SSS (secondary), and Port-Louis North SSS (secondary).
The announcement was made this afternoon by the Minister of Education, Mahend Gungapersad, who was responding to a parliamentary question raised by Tony Apollon.
Student Relocation and Historical Context
Minister Gungapersad assured Parliament that currently enrolled students will be relocated to nearby institutions.
He also provided context on previous closures, noting that 17 schools—comprising 11 primary and 6 secondary schools—have already been shut down between 2002 and the present day.
Future Use of Vacated Buildings
Addressing the future of the vacant properties, Mahend Gungapersad confirmed that the Economic Development Board (EDB) has requested information.
The EDB will study the possibility of converting the unoccupied school buildings into income-generating projects.
