17-Year-Old Mauritian Teen Dies After Tragic Jet Ski Accident in Dubai
Devastating tragedy occured in Dubai, as a promising young life was cut short. Saniah Hobass, a beloved 17-year-old girl from Rose-Hill, Mauritius, sadly lost her life in a jet ski accident at sea in Jumeirah.
Saniah was enjoying a holiday in the emirate with her cousin, having arrived on 3 December, when the grave accident occurred. While Saniah did not survive, her cousin, who was also on board, was seriously injured and is receiving urgent care at Rashid Hospital.
The profound grief of her family and friends in Mauritius is palpable following this heartbreaking news.
The news has caused deep shock and distress among the victim’s family and loved ones in Mauritius. The tragedy is particularly heartbreaking as the accident occurred just one day before Saniah’s 17th birthday on 8 December.
Official Response and Support
Local authorities in Dubai are currently investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.
Showkutally Soodhun, the former roving ambassador of Mauritius to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, and Bahrain, who is currently in Dubai, said he was contacted by the family’s close relatives.
Mr Soodhun stated that he is supporting the family and intervening with Dubai authorities to offer assistance.
He met with the family on Monday evening and also visited the hospital, describing the event as “a veritable tragedy” and “very saddening.”
The Mauritian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ritish Ramful, confirmed he was informed of the tragedy while in a meeting.
He stated, “We are closely monitoring the situation,” and is following up with Mauritian officials in Dubai.
The Minister also confirmed that the Mauritian consul is currently carrying out the necessary procedures to repatriate the body.
