A staggering 806 serious road accidents—including 287 fatalities—were reported in connection with drink-driving, drug use, or drivers without a license over a four-year period, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam told Parliament on Tuesday.

The figures, covering the period from 1 January 2022 to 28 November 2025, were released in response to a question from MP Farhad Aumeer concerning serious traffic incidents involving impaired or unlicensed drivers.

Key Accident Statistics

Of the 287 fatal accidents reported to the police during the timeframe, the statistics specifically break down the causes as follows:

  • 25 cases involved drink-driving.
  • 8 cases involved driving after consuming drugs.
  • 8 cases involved driving without a valid license.

Rental Vehicles Involved

The Prime Minister also provided data regarding rental vehicles implicated in accidents over the same period:

  • 110 legally rented vehicles were involved in road accidents.
  • 4 illegally rented vehicles were also involved.

Of the legally rented vehicles involved, two were linked to fatal crashes where the driver was intoxicated, and one was involved in a fatal accident following drug consumption.

Government Vows Action

Prime Minister Ramgoolam stressed the severity of the crisis, stating, “these figures are a reminder that reckless and illegal driving costs lives.”

He confirmed the government’s commitment to tackling the issue through three core approaches:

  1. Reinforced enforcement of current law.
  2. Strengthened legislation.
  3. Utilisation of smarter technologies.
