Specialist from Yashoda Hospital Tackles Mauritian Vascular Disease, Training 2 Teams
Mauritius is significantly reinforcing its public vascular surgery capabilities through a medical mission under a bilateral agreement, bringing the expertise of an internationally renowned specialist from Yashoda Hospital, India.
Top Doctor on-site to Tackle Complex Procedures
The most newsworthy element of the story is the direct intervention to improve the surgical care of severe vascular diseases.
Health and Wellness Minister, Anil Kumar Bachoo, confirmed the development following a visit on Monday to the Sir-Anerood-Jugnauth Hospital in Constance, Flacq.
He met with Dr. Vinay Kumar, the distinguished vascular surgeon from India, who is currently in Mauritius as part of the medical mission.
Dr. Kumar, who specialises in vascular pathologies, is carrying out complex procedures on patients suffering from blockages or lesions of the blood vessels.
Focus on High-Demand Interventions
The specialist’s work is focusing on critical, high-demand interventions, including:
- The creation of arterio-venous fistulae, which are essential procedures for dialysis patients.
- Surgeries related to Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), a condition that restricts blood flow to the limbs and can lead to amputations.
This focus is particularly vital for Mauritius, which faces a high prevalence of diabetes, making advanced surgical management of these severe vascular diseases a priority.
Bilateral Agreement Key to Skill Transfer
Minister Bachoo highlighted that this visit is a direct result of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Health Ministry and Yashoda Hospital.
The agreement is designed to be a two-way benefit, not only allowing Mauritian patients to be sent to India for highly specialised treatment but also facilitating the exchange of Indian doctors to Mauritius.
The mission of these visiting doctors is three-fold: to perform complex operations, to train local medical teams, and to contribute to the transfer of skills in specialised medical fields.
