Police Net Nearly 300,000 Drivers in 3-Month Road Blitz
55,228 total traffic fines were issued by law enforcement during a three-month period of intense enforcement action. This came as part of nearly 300,000 “Stop and Search” operations which also led to the detection of 1,519 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Serious Offence Detections
The most critical impact of the unprecedented road safety campaign, which ran from September to November 25th, was the crackdown on serious driving offences.
- Of the 291,450 checks performed:
- 1,519 drivers were caught for driving while drunk or under the influence of narcotics.
- Alcohol Offences:1,265 drivers tested positive for alcohol.
- October recorded the highest number of positive cases with 451, followed by September (424) and November (390).
- Drug Offences: A total of 254 positive drug tests were recorded.
- The breakdown saw 79 in September, a peak of 103 in October, and 72 in November.
High Volume of Fines Issued
The sheer scale of the operation resulted in a high volume of sanctions, underscoring the persistence of risky behaviour on the roads:
- A total of 55,228 fixed penalty notices (contraventions) were issued in the three months.
- The peak for issuing fines coincided with the intensity of the checks:
- October recorded the highest number of fines with 20,529.
- September followed closely with 20,357.
- The drop in enforcement activity in November saw the number of fines fall to 14,342, confirming a direct link between police presence and issuing tickets.
Operational Scale
Law enforcement maintained a massive effort on the road network, averaging close to 3,200 verification operations daily.
- The operation was most active at the beginning of the period:
- October was the busiest month with 109,059 operations.
- September was just behind with 105,964 operations.
- While enforcement saw a slight decrease in November, with 76,427 operations, the overall effort remained highly sustained.
