Torrential downpours and thunderstorms are forecast for parts of the region this Friday, November 21, as atmospheric conditions become increasingly unstable due to a warm northerly air current.

Key Details and Regional Breakdown

The meteorological station in Vacoas has issued a warning about gradually developing instability. While the morning is expected to start mainly fine, cloud cover will increase throughout the day, bringing rain.

The most significant risk of weather disruption is expected from this afternoon onwards, when showers are likely to become locally moderate and carry the threat of thunderstorms.

  • Overnight Forecast: Moderate showers and the risk of thunderstorms are set to continue into the night.

Temperature and Wind

The warm northerly air current is contributing to high temperatures across the region:

  • Maximum Temperatures:
    • Coastal Regions: Between 30 and 32°C.
    • High Ground (Heights): Between 26 and 28°C.
  • Minimum Temperatures:
    • Central Plateau: 18 to 20°C.
    • Coastal Areas (Littoral): 22 to 24°C.
  • Wind: Expect a northerly wind blowing at approximately 20 km/h.

Public and Maritime Warnings

The public is urged to take precautionary measures, especially when thunderstorms are active.

  • During a thunderstorm: Stay under shelter, avoid open plains, hiking, and sea outings. Crucially, the public is advised not to shelter beneath trees.

Maritime conditions are also affected:

  • The sea will be agitated beyond the reefs.
  • South-westerly swells of approximately 2 metres are expected.
