French President Emmanuel Macron used his official visit to Mauritius to kick off a critical multi-day tour of Africa, signaling a push to renew France’s relationships across the continent. Beyond the standard diplomatic formalities, the visit focusing heavily on future-oriented strategic cooperation, particularly in the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Blue Economy.

The President’s agenda included high-level talks and the signing of key agreements aimed at strengthening dialogue on renewable energy and shared expertise on marine resource management.

Key Diplomatic Engagements and Agreements

The visit’s core purpose, according to online reports, was to reset France’s partnership model in Africa. The official schedule was robust:

  • Bilateral Meetings: President Macron held a private tête-à-tête with the Mauritian Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, following a courtesy call to the President of the Republic. This culminated in a planned joint statement to the press.

Strategic Agreements: The centerpiece of the cooperation was the signing of a Déclaration d’intention pour la coopération sur l’économie bleue. This agreement mandates future collaboration on marine biology, biotechnology, and at-sea campaigns.

Energy and Technology: A separate Partnership Agreement is set to be signed to enhance the exchange of expertise on renewable energy integration in Mauritius.

Official Arrival and Social Schedule

The trip was a symbolic display of diplomatic commitment, being the first visit by a French President since 1993.

Arrival, November 20: The official visit commenced with a formal arrival and welcome at the airport by Mauritian officials.

He also visited the vessels ‘Plastic Odyssey’ and ‘Champlain’ to highlight environmental and maritime interests.

The Banquet: The day’s official activities were capped off with a formal banquet held at the Le Meridien Ile Maurice resort in Pointe aux Piments, a customary element of high-level state visits.
