Employees Union Wins Recognition Battle Against Bank of Mauritius
The Bank of Mauritius Employees Union (BOMEU) has secured a significant victory, with the Employment Relations Tribunal (ERT) ordering the Bank of Mauritius to officially recognise the union as the sole authorised representative for negotiations with management.
Tribunal Rules in Favour of BOMEU
The landmark ruling, handed down on Monday, November 3, is a major win for the BOMEU and its president, Chid Rughoobur.
The Tribunal’s judgement specifically noted that more than half of the employees within the bargaining unit support the BOMEU.
This finding was the basis for the order mandating the Bank of Mauritius to formally grant recognition to the union.
President’s Suspension Context
The positive outcome comes for BOMEU’s president, Chid Rughoobur, who remains suspended from his duties as an analyst at the Bank of Mauritius.
Rughoobur has been under suspension since July in connection with an ongoing police matter.
This judicial victory, marking the end of the union’s struggle for formal representation, is a “positive denouement” for its leader, despite his current employment status.
