Noise Pollution: Rs 10,000 Fine Looms for Drivers with Loud Exhausts

The penalty for using modified exhaust systems has been drastically increased to Rs 10,000, effective from August 9, 2025, in a move designed to curb noise pollution.
The fine, previously ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000, was raised under the Finance Act 2025 to boost the deterrent effect of the sanctions.
This measure was confirmed by the Minister of Environment, Rajesh Bhagwan, in response to a parliamentary question from MP Daureeawo.
Vehicle Prohibitions and Enforcement
Beyond the increased fixed penalties, existing legislation allows authorised officers to issue a prohibition notice to a vehicle when it exceeds the permitted noise limit by more than 10 dB(A) during a sound emission test, as per Regulation 20 of the Road Traffic (Control of Vehicle Emissions) Regulations 2002.
This prohibition notice bars the vehicle from public roads until the defect has been satisfactorily rectified within a maximum period of 14 days from the date of the notice.
Private testing centres are already tasked with ensuring compliance during technical inspections, using sound level meters to measure vehicle noise against the standards set out in Regulations 18 and 20 of the same Act.
Recent Violations
Between January 2025 and October 23, 2025, authorities have recorded a total of 43 contraventions specifically for excessive noise from modified exhaust systems. Furthermore, 89 contraventions were recorded during the same period for powerful sound equipment installed in vehicles.
