Barrister with 12 Years’ Legal Experience Takes Top EOC Post
 
																								
												
												
											Carolyn Desvaux de Marigny, a barrister with a diverse practice, was sworn in as the new Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) on Thursday, October 30, at State House, Réduit.
The appointment sees her succeed Ahmad Sulliman Jeewah. Ms. Desvaux de Marigny was previously practising at De Speville-Desvaux Chambers before her nomination to the EOC.
Ms. Desvaux de Marigny was called to the Bar of England and Wales in July 2010, and subsequently to the Mauritian Bar in January 2012.
Her professional legal training was undertaken at the University of Law in Birmingham, UK, following studies at the University of Bristol.
She also holds an LL.M in International Legal Practice, a joint programme by the International Bar Association and the College of Law.
According to the De Speville-Desvaux Chambers website, since being called to the Bar, she has “gained solid experience in litigation and legal counsel.”
Her career includes working in a law firm, initially in the litigation department and later in business law, before serving as in-house counsel for a multi-sectoral conglomerate between 2018 and 2021.
Ms. Desvaux de Marigny’s varied practice centres on civil and commercial law, with a specialisation in labour law.
She advises both SMEs and large companies on their legal and strategic obligations. Furthermore, she supports several NGOs dedicated to the protection and empowerment of vulnerable individuals.
Since 2022, she has been teaching civil procedure at a university level and serves as the Treasurer of the Bar Council within the Mauritius Bar Association.
