Goat Farmers to Get Rs 6,000 Payout Per Animal After Outbreak

The outbreak of the contagious disease, which affects goats, was officially confirmed by Health Minister Anil Bachoo, following an inspection carried out by the Mauritius Meat Authority (MMA). This Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia (CCPP) outbreak has claimed the lives of approximately fifteen goats and struck ten farms across the island since August 2025, it has been confirmed.

In a bid to support those affected, farmers enrolled in the small farmers’ protection programme are set to receive compensation of Rs 6,000 for each animal lost.

Minister Bachoo also provided an update on the recovery rate, stating that around five per cent of infected goats treated promptly have since recovered.

Regular monitoring is continuing across the affected farms.

The farms involved have also been subject to awareness campaigns on the importance of bolstering biosecurity measures.

The Minister’s statement on the fatality figures comes as the industry awaits results from the National Centre for Agronomic Research Cooperation for Development.
