Severe Tropical Storm ‘Chenge’ Poses ‘Potential Threat’ to Agalega
The Moderate Tropical Storm Chenge has intensified into a Severe Tropical Storm, posing a potential threat to Agalega, according to a special bulletin issued by the Mauritius Meteorological Services (MMS). The first special communique for the island was released at 05:45 on Wednesday, 22 October.
Storm Status and Trajectory
As of 04:00 this morning, Chenge was centred near 10.4° South / 63.4° East, placing it approximately 735 km to the east of Agalega.
The severe storm is currently moving west-south-west at about 15 km/h. Its current trajectory means it represents a “potential menace” to Agalega.
Weather Forecast and Conditions
Active cloud bands associated with Chenge are expected to influence the island’s weather from this afternoon. Conditions will become gradually cloudy to overcast, bringing scattered showers that may be moderately or heavily intense at times, accompanied by thunderstorms.
Wind from the south is forecast to be around 40 km/h, but will progressively strengthen as the storm nears Agalega, with gusts potentially reaching 90 km/h.
Sea Conditions and Public Safety Warning
Sea conditions are expected to become rough to very rough from tonight, with the presence of significant swells. The public is strictly advised against venturing out to sea.
Residents in Agalega are urged to take the following precautions:
- Remain indoors and avoid open areas or sheltering under trees during thunderstorms.
- Consolidate homes and structures.
- Prepare an emergency kit.
- Secure all watercraft.
