109,000 Mauritians Now Classified as Poor, Minister Vows Reform
Shocking figures reveal 109,000 Mauritian citizens are currently classified as poor, Social Security Minister Ashok Subron announced on Wednesday, 15 October.
The news came during a symposium at Côte d’Or, held to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
The current definition of relative poverty in the nation means any family earning less than Rs 14,500 per month is categorised as poor.
However, Minister Subron revealed that the Government intends to revise this existing threshold.
In a hint at the likely new benchmark, Subron cited the new Legal Aid Act.
This legislation indicates a new measure for state support, where a couple with Rs 25,000 remaining after domestic expenditure can now benefit from government assistance.
All figures and proposals were presented by Mr Subron, confirming the urgent need for reassessment in the country’s poverty metrics.
