Mauritius Takes Top Spot: 181 Votes Secure 3rd UN Human Rights Council Term
Mauritius has secured a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council, topping the poll with a massive 181 votes out of 190 total votes cast. The election results, which saw Mauritius elected at the head of the list, were confirmed in a communiqué issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade on Tuesday, 14 October.
The vote took place on the same day at the UN General Assembly. Mauritius will serve a three-year term on the Council, commencing on 1 January 2026 and concluding on 31 December 2028.
According to the communiqué, being elected at the head of the list “illustrates the recognition of Mauritius in the field of human rights, as well as the confidence of States in Mauritius.”
The Mauritian government, it adds, “will continue to work for the promotion and protection of human rights and respect for international law.”
This latest term marks the third time Mauritius will sit on the subsidiary body of the UN General Assembly, which is based in Geneva.
Council terms are for three years and are renewable once. Mauritius previously served as a member of the Council from 2006 to 2012.
