Historic 1st: Agaléga Students Sit Exams on Island, End 100s of Miles of Travel

Students on the remote Mauritian archipelago of Agaléga are sitting their School Certificate (SC) examinations on the island today, Wednesday, 15 October, for the first time in history.

The landmark arrangement means pupils have avoided the necessity of travelling to Mauritius to take the exams, marking a significant change for the island’s community.

Education Minister Mahend Gungapersad is on Agaléga this morning, accompanied by ministry technicians, to observe the running of this inaugural locally-held exam session.

The initiative follows an announcement made by Mr Gungapersad earlier this year.

After a visit to Cambridge in the United Kingdom, the Minister had formally requested that students from Agaléga be allowed to take both the SC and Higher School Certificate (HSC) exams directly on their archipelago.

This move was specifically aimed at preventing students from having to travel to Mauritius for these national examinations.
