Mauritius faces a serious risk of power cuts across the island this evening, Wednesday 15th October, with the Central Electricity Board (CEB) battling an urgent energy supply situation.

CEB spokesperson, Thierry Ramasawmy, described the threat as “the worst-case scenario” as the utility struggles to ensure supply across the island tonight. The CEB is working flat out to prevent blackouts in certain areas this evening.

The crisis stems from a critical fault that occurred on Tuesday evening, when a 30-megawatt engine failed at the Fort George power station.

Mr. Ramasawmy, speaking on a 10 am news flash on Radio Plus, indicated that repairs are currently underway. “We hope this engine can be put back into service before 6 pm to ensure the electricity supply,” he stated.

Current forecasts indicate that production tonight will be limited to 466 MW, while demand is estimated at 445 MW, leaving very little margin for manoeuvre.

In an effort to ease the strain, the CEB has issued an urgent appeal to hotels, asking them to temporarily integrate their generators into the electrical network to reduce overall demand.

The utility insists it is doing everything possible to avoid a general blackout this evening.

The CEB is also urging all consumers to be vigilant and responsible with their electricity consumption until the situation is fully resolved.
