Civil Aviation: Who Authorised Controversial Madagascar Jet Landing in Mauritius?

The acting Prime Minister of Mauritius, Paul Bérenger, has ordered an immediate inquiry into the emergency landing of a private jet from Madagascar in the early hours of Sunday, 12 October.

Mr. Bérenger expressed his “revolt” after the aircraft, carrying former Malagasy Prime Minister Christian Ntsay, a businessman, and their relatives, landed in the country.

The Interim PM stated he was “dissatisfied” with the conditions under which the private flight was permitted to land and asserted that clear instructions from Civil Aviation had not been followed.

He confirmed he has already informed the Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, who is currently abroad, about the situation.

The development came as Mr. Bérenger asserted he is following the situation in Madagascar “hour by hour.”

He further stated that any request for landing from the Malagasy President would be considered.

Protests in Madagascar, which began with young people demonstrating against water and electricity cuts, have escalated into a broader movement against President Andry Rajoelina.
