Mauritius Jumps to 21st in Global Economic Freedom Ranking
Mauritius has secured the top position among African countries in the Fraser Institute’s 2025 Economic Freedom of the World report, achieving a global rank of 21st. The island nation was the highest-ranked of only four African economies to break into the world’s top 100 for economic freedom.
African Performance Highlights
The 2025 report reveals that only a handful of African states are demonstrating high levels of economic liberty.
Mauritius, with a notable score of 7.76, is followed on the continent by the Seychelles, which placed 31st globally with a score of 7.58.
Cape Verde also performed strongly, ranking 44th worldwide (score 7.44), while Morocco completed the quartet of top African performers, taking the 94th position with a score of 6.38.
The Fraser Institute’s Methodology
The annual study, which assesses 165 countries, measures economic freedom based on performance across five key pillars.
These pillars are critical indicators of a country’s economic policy and environment, including monetary stability, trade openness, and institutional strength.
The rankings are compiled by the Canadian think-tank, the Fraser Institute.
