UK and Mauritius Agree on 4 Priority Areas to Ratify Chagos Deal
The protracted negotiations between Mauritius and the United Kingdom over the future of the Chagos Archipelago are moving forward following a “positive and productive” meeting held on 30th September in Port Louis.
The talks, aimed at finalising a treaty on the strategically important archipelago, involved high-level delegations from both nations, underscoring the serious commitment to reaching a resolution. The discussions were described by both sides as “constructive and productive.”
Key Issues Under Negotiation
Four priority issues are currently dominating the discussions:
- Marine environmental protection
- Security
- Resettlement of former inhabitants
- Creation of a trust fund
High-Level Attendees
Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam hosted the British delegation at the Treasury Building. The UK team was led by diplomat Harriet Mathews, a former director at the Foreign Office.
Key figures present at the meeting included Mauritian Deputy Prime Minister Paul Bérenger and Attorney General Gavin Glover, alongside British High Commissioner Paul Brummell.
Focus on Transfer of Responsibility
According to Attorney General Glover, these subjects demand considerable attention, particularly in ensuring the gradual transfer of responsibilities from British to Mauritian authorities upon ratification.
Next Steps Scheduled
Despite the positive outcome, Ms. Mathews confirmed the “ample work remaining” and that more meetings will be scheduled in the coming months to advance toward ratification.
A further videoconference is planned for 22 October, followed by a visit from a Mauritian delegation to London in mid-November.
These steps will take place while awaiting a decision from the House of Lords.
