Death Toll Rises: 113 Fatalities in Mauritius Since January 2025

Mauritius has seen an alarming surge in fatalities since the start of the year, with a total of 113 deaths recorded from drownings and road accidents, according to figures released by the Police Press Office.

Road and Sea Tragedies

The most recent count, up to 24 September, reveals that road accidents are the leading cause of death, claiming 90 lives. These fatalities resulted from 84 separate fatal accidents, with some incidents tragically involving multiple victims.

In addition to the road toll, 23 drownings have been officially recorded. The vast majority of those who drowned were male, with the victims comprising 19 men and four women.

Official Warning Issued

In response to the concerning figures, authorities have issued a direct appeal for heightened public vigilance. The Police Press Office stressed the need for both drivers and seafarers to exercise extreme caution.

Officials urged drivers to strictly respect speed limits and implored individuals engaging in water activities to follow sea safety instructions. Specific advice included avoiding swimming in bad weather and taking all necessary precautions before venturing out onto the water.

The overarching message from the authorities is that prudence, both behind the wheel and at sea, is “essential” for protecting one’s own life and the lives of others.
