Middlesex University is the 1st Private School to Reach 2K Students in Mauritius
Middlesex University’s campus in Flic-en-Flac, Mauritius, has opened a new, cutting-edge building, doubling its student capacity to 2,000, making it the largest private higher education institution on the island. The new wing, named Cat Hill, was inaugurated on Friday by Minister of Higher Education, Kaviraj Sukon, and representatives from the British High Commission, Medine, and Middlesex University London. The expansion, which covers 2,300 square meters, features state-of-the-art facilities designed to foster academic innovation and industry engagement.
New Facilities and Programmes
The new building is equipped with modern amenities for real-time hybrid teaching, including computer labs, production studios, and an industry-standard Mechatronics and Robotics Laboratory.
The expansion coincides with the launch of new courses, such as the BEng Mechatronics & Robotics Engineering and BSc (Hons) Artificial Intelligence & Data Science, along with several master’s programmes in science and engineering.
These new offerings are designed to provide students with practical experience that aligns with current and future job market needs. Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus Director, Prof.
Mari Jansen Van Rensburg, stated that Cat Hill “is a symbol of our mission” and “illustrates our commitment to combining British academic excellence with Mauritian realities.”
International Collaboration and Future Growth
Middlesex University Mauritius is also forging international partnerships to enhance its global reach. It has signed memorandums of understanding with three Japanese companies—Darajapan, Creatair, and Wings Robotics—to create opportunities for recruitment, applied research, and internships.
The new infrastructure and collaborations are intended to solidify the university’s position as a centre of excellence and innovation.
Dominique Arlanda, Chief Operating Officer, described the campus expansion as a “significant step,” emphasising the integration of “the best innovations and practices” from the university’s main campus in Hendon, UK.
Official Tributes
During the inauguration, James Smith, CIO of Middlesex University UK, highlighted the campus’s positive impact on young people and praised Mauritius’s growing role as a global hub for education and research.
Minister Sukon congratulated the university on its 15th anniversary and the completion of the Cat Hill building, underscoring its contribution to higher education and human capital development.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to transforming Mauritius into a hub for knowledge and research, and announced plans to introduce a core module in artificial intelligence for all higher education students.
