Mauritian Labour Minister, Reza Uteem, has criticised the slow pace of resolving industrial disputes, calling for more efficiency in the system. The minister’s comments were made at the start of a three-day national conference on labour and employment, the Assises du Travail et de l’emploi, held at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Public Service and Innovation in Côte-d’Or.

Conference aims to address key labour challenges

The conference, organised by the Ministry of Labour, brings together key players in the professional world, including representatives from both employers and employees.

Over the three days, delegates will debate a range of key themes and anticipate challenges facing the labour market, such as the shortage of skilled labour and the recruitment of migrant workers.

Calls for greater flexibility in labour laws

A representative from the business community, Pradeep Dursun, Chief Operating Officer of Business Mauritius, highlighted the need for greater flexibility within the country’s labour laws.

Employer representatives have stated their commitment to listening to all stakeholders present at the conference to find concrete solutions to these pressing issues.
