A Mauritian shopkeeper, with the help of his wife, has foiled an armed robbery at their store in Baie-du-Tombeau, despite suffering a minor injury in the process.

The 62-year-old businessman was alerted to the break-in on Sunday, 21 September, after an alarm on his phone was triggered around 7.50am.

Arriving at the scene with his 58-year-old wife, they discovered the back door padlock had been broken and a young man was inside, rummaging through shelves.

The suspect, identified as Jean Ashley Silvester Allas, 28, allegedly produced a knife and advanced towards the shopkeeper when confronted.

A struggle ensued, during which the shopkeeper sustained a slight cut to his elbow while he and his wife wrestled the intruder to the ground.

Police from Baie-du-Tombeau arrested the suspect, who was found in possession of stolen goods including alcohol, cigarettes, lighters, and a soft drink, with an estimated value of Rs 8,400. Two knives were also seized.

The unemployed man reportedly attempted to break his handcuffs while in police custody. He now faces a police investigation for attempted aggravated burglary, assault, and damage to public property.
