Rare McLaren F1 Supercar Arrives in Mauritius for New Museum
A rare and iconic McLaren F1, chassis number 037, has been flown from London Gatwick Airport to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport in Mauritius. The legendary 1990s supercar, often hailed as “the best car ever built,” will be a star attraction at the new Milestones Motor Museum, which is currently under construction in Beaux Songes and scheduled to open in late 2026.
The arrival of the vehicle caused a stir on social media on Thursday, 18 September, after a photograph of the car was posted on Facebook.
Only 62 of the McLaren F1 were ever produced, making it one of the most sought-after cars in the world.
One example recently sold at auction for a staggering $23 million (approximately 1.04 billion Mauritian rupees).
Designed by visionary engineer Gordon Murray with input from three-time world champion Ayrton Senna, the McLaren F1 once held the record as the world’s fastest car, reaching 385 km/h.
Its distinctive design features a central driver’s seat flanked by two passenger seats, and its exclusivity has attracted celebrity owners, including Lewis Hamilton, Elon Musk, and Jay Leno.
Chassis number 037, the specific car that has arrived in Mauritius, has a unique history of its own. It is the only McLaren F1 with a full Alcantara interior.
Originally commissioned by Ron Dennis, the former chairman of McLaren, it was later acquired by a German collector based in Monaco before travelling to South Africa, the United States, and the United Kingdom. In 2020, it won an award at the prestigious Salon Privé Concours d’Elegance.
The Milestones Motor Museum, which aims to become a key destination for car enthusiasts and the general public, promises to offer a unique look into automotive history.
The museum’s acquisition of the McLaren F1 marks a significant addition to the world’s automotive heritage.
