A historic colonial building in Mahébourg, believed to be the oldest in the region, has been destroyed by a fire. The blaze, which broke out at approximately 1 pm on Wednesday, September 17, engulfed the centenary structure, which housed four businesses.

Firefighters were quickly on the scene and, following a difficult operation, managed to bring the fire under control.

While there were no reported casualties, material damage is extensive. Significant plumes of black smoke were released, polluting the air and causing distress to local residents.

The loss of the building, situated near the Waterfront, has deeply affected the local community.

A resident named Siddick said he was very moved and that “tears were flowing freely.” He described the approximately 100-year-old building as an integral part of Mahébourg’s historic heritage.

For the business owners, the situation is devastating. Akbar Ozeerally, who had worked in the building for 40 years, estimated his losses at nearly Rs 500,000, including Adidas and Nike shoes.

Fazley Allybocus reported that his brother lost everything, with his nephew’s clothes being burned in the fire. However, they were able to save three gas canisters and a freezer.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire, which has not only destroyed a piece of the town’s history but also a vital workplace for several families.
