Probe Demanded: ‘Transparency Mauritius’ Calls for 2 Inquiries into BoM
Anti-corruption group Transparency Mauritius has demanded internal and external investigations into the Bank of Mauritius after a leaked audio recording surfaced on social media. The organisation seeks to determine if there has been any interference in the institution’s operations.
The audio recording, featuring a voice attributed to Tevin Sithanen, the son of the central bank’s governor, also includes voices allegedly belonging to Aditi Boolell, daughter of the former Director of Public Prosecutions, and Stéphane Adam of Menlo Park Ltd.
In the recording, the voice attributed to Mr Sithanen allegedly threatens Ms Boolell with the words “Pou faire aret twa” (I’ll have you arrested).
Other remarks heard on the tape include “MIC dan nou la main” (the MIC is in our hands) and “Nou ki kontrol partou” (we control everywhere), alongside other offensive language.
Transparency Mauritius spokesperson Laura Jaymangal stressed the need to swiftly authenticate the recording to prevent premature conclusions and to establish clear lines of responsibility if any interference is confirmed.
In a statement released on Monday, September 15, Mr Sithanen’s legal representatives, barrister Imtihaz Mamoojee and attorney Dya Ghose-Radhakeesoon, said their client “has taken note of the circulation of a recording which is falsely attributed to him.”
They added that Mr Sithanen “expressly reserves the right to initiate legal proceedings” against anyone involved in its dissemination and expressed “full confidence in the authorities’ ability to shed light on these actions.”
