Mauritius Telecom Reports Rs 1 Million in Cable Vandalism Damage

A deliberate act of vandalism has caused over Rs one million in damage to a crucial undersea fibre-optic cable, Mauritius Telecom confirmed on Monday September 14. The company, which has filed a formal complaint with police, described the attack as “targeted,” noting that other nearby cables were left untouched.

The LION (Lower Indian Ocean Network) cable was intentionally severed on Friday, September 12, between Terre Rouge and Le Goulet.

This criminal act resulted in financial losses exceeding Rs 1 million, including infrastructure and operational costs.

Mauritius Telecom technicians worked quickly to repair the damage, restoring the cable within 24 hours on Saturday, September 13.

The company stated that thanks to network redundancy, internet traffic was immediately rerouted through other undersea cable systems, preventing any service disruption for customers.

The incident has prompted Mauritius Telecom to announce it’s increasing its surveillance and protection measures for its infrastructure to prevent future occurrences.

The company is now awaiting a full police investigation.
