2 Incidents over the Month: Officials Investigate Dead Fish at Popular Beaches
Another case of dead fish washing ashore has been reported in Mauritius, prompting an investigation by environmental authorities. Following a similar incident at Hardy River on August 25, four dead fish were discovered on a beach at Butte-à-l’Herbe, Calodyne, this past weekend. Officials believe the deaths are the result of illegal dumping rather than water pollution.
Investigation Underway
Following the discovery, officers from the Ministry of Environment, the police, and the Fisheries Protection Service inspected the site.
They found four fish, between 20 and 25 cm in length, in an advanced state of decomposition with signs of perforation.
The Fisheries Protection Service retrieved the fish for testing. Water samples were also taken and sent to the National Environment Laboratory for analysis.
The sea water appeared clear, and no other dead fish were found along the coastline. There are no factories or rivers nearby.
Previous Incident
This new case follows the discovery of dozens of dead saltwater fish, including mullets, jacks, red mullets, and groupers, in the Hardy River on August 25.
The fish were between 15 and 60 cm long. In both incidents, authorities have ruled out water quality as a cause.
The Ministry of Environment has urged the public to be vigilant and report any similar finds, while also clarifying the difference between fish deaths caused by pollution and those caused by illegal dumping.
