Infant, 2 Months Old, Hospitalised with Suspected Abuse and Skull Fracture

A two-month-old infant is in hospital with a fractured skull and internal bleeding, with doctors suspecting child abuse. The baby was admitted to Dr Jeetoo Hospital in Port Louis after being referred by a private clinic following a medical examination.

Police Investigation Launched

The child’s parents, a couple from Port Louis, brought the baby to the clinic with a referral note.

A CT scan of the brain revealed an intracranial haemorrhage (bleeding inside the skull) and a fractured skull.

An additional bruise was also noted on the infant’s left cheek. A full-body scan, however, showed no other internal or external injuries.

Due to the severity of the injuries, a radiologist and a paediatrician were consulted, and both confirmed the diagnosis.

The attending doctors were unconvinced by the parents’ explanation for the injuries, which they said were caused by a “remote control” falling on the baby’s head.

Consequently, the case was reported to the police. The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Metro Nord is now handling the investigation.

Widespread Concern

Following the transfer of the baby to a specialised paediatric ward at Dr Jeetoo Hospital, officers from the forensics department went to the family’s home in Port Louis.

A police watch has also been established outside the residence under the orders of Superintendent Badal to secure the scene for the investigation.

Authorities are working to determine whether the infant’s injuries were the result of an accident or an act of abuse. The baby’s condition remains a cause for concern.
