Police Superintendent Ashik Jagai has been rearrested on suspicion of witness intimidation, barely a week after his conditional release. The former SST leader, who was previously arrested on August 13 in connection with the “Reward Money” scandal, is now suspected of having interfered with and intimidated a witness in an ongoing case.

The alleged interference was reportedly to influence the witness into making a statement favorable to Jagai’s son. He has since been brought before the court in Port Louis.

Jagai, the former head of the Special Striking Team (SST), was actively sought by the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

He eventually presented himself at the FCC headquarters in Réduit at approximately 9:30 AM on Wednesday, September 10, accompanied by his lawyer, Me Axel Bucktowar.

Background of the ‘Reward Money’ Case

Superintendent Jagai was initially arrested on Wednesday, August 13, as part of the “Reward Money” investigation.

The FCC alleges that he recommended several irregular payments from a fund originally intended for police informants.

He was granted conditional freedom on Tuesday, September 2. A key condition of his release, set by the Port Louis court, was a strict prohibition from contacting any witnesses or suspects.
