Legal Battle Erupts: Le Saint Géran Seeks Injunction Against 10 Fishermen
A luxury hotel in Mauritius, the One&Only Le Saint Géran, has taken legal action against a group of local fishermen, despite recent talks aimed at resolving a dispute over coastal construction work.
The hotel filed an injunction in the Supreme Court against several fishermen, accusing them of obstructing work at its construction site.
The case was scheduled to be heard last Friday, 5th September, but was postponed to September 10 after the fishermen failed to appear in court.
This legal move comes just days after the hotel’s management held a fourth meeting on Wednesday, September 3, with a group of 10 fishermen led by Vincent Sakir.
The discussions focused on ongoing coastal protection work, which includes the construction of breakwaters, rock armour, and beach rehabilitation.
The meeting followed a site visit a week prior, during which the fishermen presented their own proposals.
In a press release issued yesterday, the hotel stated that the fishermen had agreed with the proposed construction methods but had demanded more extensive financial compensation.
The hotel claims it has already provided compensation to some fishermen for the current work and for a period in 2024.
According to the hotel, the fishermen are now demanding that compensation be calculated retroactively, going back to last year.
The hotel also noted that the work’s potential environmental impact is being monitored by relevant authorities and that regular reports are submitted to the Ministry of the Environment as part of an Environmental Monitoring Plan, in accordance with its EIA license.
