Dawood Rawat Demands $300,000 Guarantee From Firms in Rs100 Billion Lawsuit

Dawood Rawat, former Chairman Emeritus of BAI Group, has demanded that three international firms pay a combined $300,000 (approximately Rs 13.8 million) in guarantees before they can challenge a subpoena in his Rs 100 billion lawsuit. Mr Rawat is seeking Rs 100 billion in damages following the dismantling of his BAI group.

The three firms—PricewaterhouseCoopers International Ltd (PWC), Grant Thornton International Ltd, and Brussels Worldwide Services BV—are being asked to each pay $100,000 (approximately Rs 4.6 million) as “security for costs”.

The demands were made by Mr Rawat’s lawyer, Vimalen Reddi, in a motion presented to Chief Justice Bibi Rehana Mungly-Gulbul. The Chief Justice has reserved time to consider the motion and will deliver her decision at a later date.

Mr Reddi also requested that the main lawsuit, in which Mr Rawat is claiming Rs 100 billion, be allowed to proceed pending a decision on the new motion. The three firms have opposed the demand for the guarantees.

Mr Rawat is suing several parties, including former Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, several ex-ministres, financial figures, and both local and foreign audit firms.

He asserted that he was harmed as the ultimate beneficiary of the BAI group after it was dismantled.

Brussels Worldwide Services BV is represented by Me Yahia Nazroo, while PWC and Grant Thornton International Ltd are represented by BLC Robert and Eversheds, respectively.
