The government is undermining its own authority and squandering its landslide election victory, according to journalist Jean-Luc Mootoosamy. Speaking on the current political climate, Mootoosamy warned that the administration is “shooting itself in the foot and wasting its 60-0” majority.

A Self-Inflicted Crisis

Mootoosamy believes that any U-turns on government policies would play into the hands of the opposition.

However, he clarified that it’s not the opposition that’s causing the government trouble; rather, the government is creating its own problems.

He said that if the executive branch revises some of its policies, it will weaken its adversaries.

If it doesn’t, the government risks fuelling an opposition that is waiting for an opportunity to claim the government has been dishonest.

The Opposition’s Weakness

Regarding the leader of the official opposition, Joe Lesjongard, Mootoosamy said he carries the “scars and baggage” of his party, the MSM.

Mootoosamy argued that as a former minister, Lesjongard is unable to effectively counter the current government’s arguments.

Yet, he said, the MSM and Lesjongard must maintain a media presence to ensure their political survival.

A Broken Promise?

The journalist also criticised the government, stating that while the MSM is accused of many things, the current government is “acting in the same way.”

He lamented that this is a shame, as the government had promised change. Mootoosamy concluded that the MSM remains a party of power, not of opposition, and should not be forgotten.
