A grandson of the late Nelson Mandela, the iconic anti-apartheid leader and first Black president of South Africa, has announced he is joining a pro-Palestinian flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza. Mandla Mandela made the announcement from Tunis, saying his participation from an African nation signifies the continent’s solidarity with the cause.

Speaking to journalists in Tunis, Mandla Mandela stated, “As a South African delegation, we have chosen to join the Global Sumud Flotilla here in Tunisia, from an African point, to say: Africa is part of this struggle.”

He added, “As Africans, we know very well what it means to live under occupation, under oppression.”

The flotilla’s organisers aim to “open a humanitarian corridor and put an end to the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.”

Ships are scheduled to leave Tunis to meet up with other activists who have already departed from Spain and Italy.

The Gaza Strip has been ravaged by a devastating war that began after an unprecedented attack by the Palestinian group Hamas on Israeli soil on October 7, 2023.

In August, the United Nations declared a state of famine in Gaza, warning that 500,000 people are in a “catastrophic” situation.
