A 49-year-old German teacher who travelled to Mauritius in search of love was robbed by a man he met on Tinder, according to local police. The man, who posed as a woman on the dating app, confessed to the crime after being arrested.

The tourist, who has not been named, lost 5,000 Mauritian Rupees, 200 euros, and his bank card. The items were stolen during a date in his hotel room on August 20, 2025.

The victim flew to the island on August 18 after messaging a woman on Tinder for several weeks.

He was captivated by her profile, which showed a beautiful young Mauritian woman with long, curly hair and a “magnificent smile”.

He arrived alone and checked into a hotel in Mont-Choisy, eager to meet the woman in person.

According to Defi Media, their first date took place on the evening of August 19. The man was collected by car and taken to a nearby restaurant where he met the woman.

She was wearing a long-sleeved yellow top, a hat, and white trousers, and had subtle makeup and pristine nails. He was reportedly “subjugated by her beauty and charm”.

The evening went well, and the tourist invited her back to his hotel room. Once there, she was hesitant when he tried to get closer.

He briefly left the room to go to the bathroom. Upon his return, the woman had vanished, along with his wallet and its contents.

Tinder date‘s arrest

He reported the theft to the police, saying his suspicions fell on the woman. He also tried to contact her himself, but was unsuccessful.

Eventually, he learned that his date was not who she claimed to be.

The police launched an investigation and obtained CCTV footage from a petrol station. The video, filmed shortly after the robbery on August 20, showed the “suspect” at the site.

Following up on the lead, officers went to the village of Le Morne on August 24 and arrested a 27-year-old man.

During questioning, the suspect admitted that he was the person who had been with the German tourist.

“I met him on Tinder. That night I dressed up as a woman, I went to meet him,” he said in a statement to investigators.

The man, who initially claimed the tourist had given him the money voluntarily, later confessed to the robbery.

Police recovered the bank card, and the man was released after posting bail of Rs 4,500.
