Air Mauritius Bans 100-Watt Power Banks on Board

Citing isolated incidents involving external batteries within the aviation sector and a “worldwide recall of certain models,” Air Mauritius has announced new restrictions on the use and carriage of power banks on its flights. The airline stated the new procedures, which took effect on September 1, 2025, are a proactive measure to ensure passenger safety.

Under the new directives, passengers are no longer permitted to charge personal devices using a power bank while on board. Additionally, power banks cannot be recharged using the aircraft’s power supply.

Passengers are now only allowed to bring power banks with a capacity of up to 100 watt-hours (Wh), as long as the capacity is clearly visible on the device. Any batteries not meeting this requirement will be denied.

Furthermore, passengers are strictly forbidden from placing power banks in checked baggage.

Once on board, the devices must be stowed in a handbag under the seat in front or in the seat pocket. They are not to be stored in bags within the overhead luggage compartments.

The airline’s official statement encourages travellers to check their power banks for compliance before boarding and to consult either the check-in or cabin crew staff for assistance.

The statement also noted that lithium batteries, found in power banks, have been involved in “rare but potentially dangerous incidents in aviation.”
