A 1.2% Jump: Birth Rate Surges to 11.2 per 1,000 People

Births are set to outpace deaths in Mauritius this year, with official projections estimating 13,920 new babies against 12,470 deaths. A report from Statistics Mauritius, released on Friday, August 29, shows a significant increase in the birth rate for the first half of 2025, while the death rate remains stable.

First Half of 2025: Key Figures

The first six months of the year saw a notable jump in births across both Mauritius and Rodrigues.

A total of 7,064 babies were born, compared to 6,268 during the same period in 2024.

This trend is expected to continue, pushing the crude birth rate to 11.2 per 1,000 residents, up from 10.3 last year.

Conversely, the death rate has remained steady. There were 6,207 recorded deaths from January to June 2025, a figure that is largely unchanged from the 6,213 deaths in the first half of 2024.

This projects an annual total of approximately 12,470 deaths, keeping the crude death rate at 10 per 1,000 residents, identical to the previous year.
