Starved and Beaten: Teen Rescued After 3-Month Captivity in Chicken Coop
A 19-year-old man has just been rescued by police after being held captive for nearly three months in a squalid chicken coop in Piton-du-Milieu.
Authorities are now actively searching for a suspect in what is being investigated as a case of unlawful imprisonment, assault, and potential human trafficking.
Dubreuil police was alerted to the situation via an emergency phone call and intervened at the scene around 8 a.m. on August 24. There, they discovered the victim in a state of extreme distress. He was found lying on a mattress, visibly weakened, with injuries consistent with sustained assault, and showed signs of severe malnutrition.
According to initial police findings, the young man had been living in deplorable, unsanitary conditions. On-site, officers reported finding several hens in a lamentable state, scattered animal carcasses, empty packets of dry noodles, and rotting vegetables.
After being stabilised by emergency medical teams at the scene, the victim was transported to Victoria Hospital in Candos. Hospital officials have confirmed his condition is now stable.
In interviews with investigators, the teenager recounted a harrowing story of deception and forced labour. He explained that he was initially hired to work at the chicken coop but never received any salary for four months of work.
Upon Rescue
“Misie mo dan problem, ed mwa” (“Sir, I am in trouble, help me”), he pleaded to the officers upon his rescue.
His account describes being lured to the location by his supposed “employer” with the promise of a job, only to be locked up and forced to serve as a guard. Every attempt to leave was met with a categorical refusal.
His sustenance was nearly non-existent, consisting mainly of dry noodles occasionally brought by the manager. The situation culminated in a violent assault, after which he was abandoned to die.
Police have identified a suspect, a resident of Résidence La Cure, and a manhunt is currently underway. The individual is wanted for alleged sequestration, assault, and human trafficking.
