Air Mauritius and Polytechnics Mauritius Launch 1st Diploma of its Kind

A new diploma programme has been launched in Mauritius to combat the country’s shortage of aviation technicians. Polytechnics Mauritius has teamed up with the national airline, Air Mauritius, to offer the first-ever Diploma in Engineering Technology (Aircraft and Engine Maintenance), designed to train local talent to service aircraft engines.

The initiative is a direct response to the long-standing practice of outsourcing these critical roles, a strategy the government is now seeking to reverse.

According to Yamal Matabudul, CEO of Polytechnics Mauritius, the programme will train young Mauritians to work on aircraft engines to the highest safety standards.

The curriculum, developed in partnership with Air Mauritius engineers, is intended to support the national strategy of strengthening local expertise and aiding the recovery of the aviation sector.

Candidates for the programme were required to have at least five credits in Grade 11, including passes in Mathematics and Physics.

The three-day selection process included an aptitude test, practical exercises, and a motivational interview.
