Rs 2,000 to 10,000 Fines Await Mauritians for Slab Water Runoff

A new fixed penalty notice will be introduced from October 1 for individuals whose slab water runoff discharges onto roads or pavements. The penalties will range from Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000. The announcement was made by Minister of National Infrastructure, Ajay Gunness, at a press conference on Thursday, August 21.

Minister Gunness said: “We will introduce a fixed penalty for those who take their slab water and discharge it on the roads and pavements.

This will be applicable from October 1. Where we find a drain discharging onto the road, we will start applying the fixed penalty notice.”

The penalties are part of a broader environmental protection and flood risk prevention strategy. The new measures coincide with the release of the Land Drainage Master Plan on Monday, August 25.

The two-volume strategic report identifies high-risk areas and indicates where construction is and isn’t permitted to increase the country’s flood resilience.
