12.5 Million Cubic Metre Dam to Revolutionize Water Supply
Mauritius has secured crucial funding from a consortium of Gulf financial institutions, led by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, for the construction of a new strategic dam at Rivière-des-Anguilles. This ambitious project, aimed at ensuring a sustainable water supply for the south of the country, was approved at a Council of Ministers meeting on Friday, 22 August 2025.
The Mauritian government, which co-signed a loan agreement with the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, has confirmed that the project will be primarily financed by external loans.
The consortium also includes the Saudi Fund for Development in Africa and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa.
The new dam will be a rockfill structure with a storage capacity of 12.5 million cubic metres.
The plans also include a mini hydroelectric power station and a water treatment plant capable of processing 50,000 cubic metres of water per day, along with other downstream works.
Officials state that the initiative will significantly bolster the region’s social, commercial, agricultural, and economic development, addressing the growing water demand in the southern part of the island.
