PM Ramgoolam Heads to Tokyo for Key Africa Development Summit

Prime Minister Dr Navin Ramgoolam has flown to Tokyo, Japan, to attend the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD). The Prime Minister departed today, August 18, and will be in Japan to participate in bilateral meetings and working sessions with representatives from various nations. In his absence, Paul Bérenger will serve as acting Prime Minister.

Conference and Economic Mission

The conference, which takes place in Yokohama from August 20 to 22, is focused on the theme “Co-creating innovative solutions with Africa.” It aims to foster new partnerships to address the continent’s development challenges.

A key part of the visit will be the official inauguration of the Mauritian Embassy in Tokyo, a move that symbolises the strengthening of diplomatic ties between Mauritius and Japan.

Dr Ramgoolam is accompanied by a delegation from the Economic Development Board (EDB) and Mauritian business leaders. Their mission is to explore economic and trade opportunities with Japan.

Recent Engagements and Return

The trip follows Dr Ramgoolam’s recent attendance at the 45th SADC Summit in Antananarivo, Madagascar, where discussions centred on strengthening regional integration, industrial capacity, value chains, and agricultural modernisation.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to return to Mauritius on August 24.
