Coastal Chaos: 4-Metre High Swell Warning for Mauritius Until 20th August
Mauritius is bracing for perilous sea conditions as a high swell warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. this Wednesday, 20 August 2025. The Meteorological Station of Vacoas issued the alert, Monday 18 August, advising the public to exercise extreme caution.
Forecasters warn that waves could reach an alarming four metres, with heavy swells expected to impact low-lying coastal areas, particularly in the west and south. The highest impact is anticipated during high tides.
The high swell is being caused by a frontal system moving in from the southwest, followed by a strong anticyclone.
This weather pattern is also bringing intermittent rain, especially to the southern regions and the central plateau.
Temperatures are expected to be cooler than usual. Maximum temperatures will range from 19 to 21°C on the central plateau and 23 to 26°C in coastal areas.
Overnight, temperatures will drop to 14-16°C in the highlands and 18-20°C along the coast.
Winds, which were light and variable this morning, are set to strengthen. They will blow from the southeast at approximately 25 km/h during the day, with gusts reaching up to 50 km/h. Winds are predicted to intensify further throughout the night.
In response to the dangerous conditions, authorities have issued a stark warning to the public. Fishermen, pleasure boaters, and the general public are being urged to stay out of the water and avoid beaches until the warning is lifted.
