Mauritius Stock Exchange Sees Over Rs 500 Million in Weekly Transactions
The Mauritius Stock Exchange recorded a surge in trading activity last week, with transaction volumes crossing the Rs 500 million mark for the week ending Wednesday 13 August. Total turnover reached Rs 514.4 million, largely fuelled by significant trades in AfreximBank, which alone accounted for Rs 370 million.
Other major contributors included MCB Group Limited (Rs 82.4 million), Africa Eats Ltd (Rs 7.3 million), Terra Mauricia Ltd (Rs 5.7 million), and SBM Holdings Ltd (Rs 4.9 million).
Despite the robust trading volumes, market indices showed mixed performance. The SEMTRI, the total return index, recorded a slight decline of 0.08%, closing at 11,303.44 points.
The SEMDEX closed at 2,430.56 points, while the SEM-10 – which tracks the top blue-chip stocks – ended at 455.35 points.
At the close of trading on Wednesday, the Official Market’s market capitalisation stood at Rs 382 billion. Of the 64 listed equities, 13 ended the week higher, 35 remained unchanged, and 16 registered losses.
Top gainers of the week included ENL Limited (+7.06%), National Investment Trust Ltd (+5.81%), Emtel Limited (+4.68%), BMH Ltd (+3.53%), and AfreximBank (+3.33%).
The largest declines were seen in Lottotech Ltd (-5.56%), Fincorp Investment Ltd (-5.09%), The Mauritius Development Investment Trust Ltd (-3.85%), ABCB Holdings Ltd (-3.54%), and Lux Island Resorts Ltd (-2.40%).
A recent analysis of the ten best-performing companies on the Official Market, based on annualised total return since listing, showed returns ranging between 12.35% and 20.05%. These companies span various sectors.
On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), the DEMEX and DEMTRI indices closed at 224.10 points and 383.62 points respectively.
Market capitalisation stood at Rs 42.3 billion, with weekly transactions totalling Rs 4.4 million.
The top ten DEM-listed companies by annualised total return since listing delivered between 11.39% and 23.11%.
These included The Union Sugar Estates Co. Ltd, Livestock Feed Ltd, Phoenix Investment Company Ltd, Associated Commercial Ltd, and United Bus Service Ltd, among others.
Internationally, major indices posted gains for the same period. The Dow Jones rose by 0.79%, while the Nasdaq surged 3.66%.
In Europe, Germany’s DAX gained 0.75%, the UK’s FTSE-100 edged up 0.06%, and France’s CAC-40 advanced by 1.74%.
