Mauritius Dons 5 Sewing Machines to Empower Female Inmates
The Mauritian Ministry of Environment has launched a new project to help female inmates reintegrate into society while raising awareness about environmental protection. As part of this initiative, five sewing machines were handed over to the prison administration during an official ceremony on Thursday 31st July at the Prison Training School gymnasium in Beau-Bassin.
The event was attended by Joanna Bérenger, Minister Delegate for Environment; Karen Foo Kune-Bacha, Minister Delegate for Youth and Sports; Gabriella Batour, Mayor of Beau-Bassin-Rose-Hill; Prem Jokhoo, Prison Commissioner; and other officials.
Minister Bérenger emphasized that ecological transition requires major changes in lifestyles, economic systems, and social structures.
She highlighted the importance of involving every citizen, especially vulnerable groups, in this process.
She explained that the sewing machines provided to female inmates will give them opportunities for empowerment through activities linked to the circular economy.
Commissioner Jokhoo noted that a key goal of the Mauritius Prison Service is to equip inmates with skills for successful social reintegration.
He mentioned that the five durable sewing machines will be used in professional training workshops specifically for women in prison.
These training sessions will focus on creating eco-friendly products from recycled textiles, promoting sustainability and circular practices.
