Tsunami Alert Off Russia: 3 Emergency Contacts for Mauritians in Distress
A tsunami warning has been issued following a powerful earthquake off Russia’s Far East. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports that a magnitude 8.7 quake struck near the Kamchatka Peninsula on July 30, 2025. The USGS image shows the earthquake’s epicenter.
The Mauritian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is monitoring the situation closely.
In a statement released this 30th July, officials confirmed their ongoing assessment of the event, which triggered tsunami alerts in several regions, including Russia, Japan, Alaska, Hawaii, China, the Philippines, the U.S. West Coast, and nearby areas.
The government advises Mauritian citizens in these zones to stay away from coastal areas and follow local authorities’ instructions for safety.
A crisis center has been set up within the ministry to assist Mauritians in distress. Those needing help can call +230 405 2576 or email mfa@govmu.org and mfaconsular@govmu.org.
Mauritian diplomatic missions abroad are also mobilized to provide necessary support during this emergency.
