During a session of Prime Minister’s Question Time (PMQT) in Parliament on Tuesday, July 29, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam questioned the high fees received by lawyer Shamila Sonah-Ori. He highlighted that she was paid a total of Rs 84.7 million between 2015 and 2024.

Ramgoolam responded to a question from opposition MP Roshan Jhummun about the lawyer’s fees and payments made for her roles on various company boards.

The payments are believed to be connected to her close ties to the Jugnauth family.

According to Ramgoolam, Sonah-Ori earned Rs 82.7 million during this period. Additionally, she received Rs 2,027,500 from the Financial Crimes Commission.

“When you add these amounts, the total paid to Mrs. Ori reaches Rs 84.7 million,” Ramgoolam said.

He questioned whether there are no other lawyers in Mauritius capable of handling such work, asking rhetorically, “How fat can you get on money?”

This was part of a broader discussion on the transparency and justification of large legal fees in the country.
