Gas Purchase Limits: 4 Cylinders per Customer to Tackle Shortages
To address supply shortages, the Ministry of Commerce has tightened rules on buying and storing subsidized cooking gas. Approved by the Cabinet last Friday, 25th July, these measures now cap each customer at four gas cylinders per sales point. The goal is to prevent repeated purchases that strain distribution.
Despite daily deliveries of about 25,000 units nationwide, shortages have been reported by midday in several regions.
The ministry also bans storing gas cylinders in unapproved locations to stop their diversion for illegal resale. There have been reports of cylinders sold above the official price of Rs 190.
Legal enforcement will be strengthened: first-time offenders may receive warnings, while repeat violations could lead to fines or penalties.
Some consumer groups support these measures. Jayen Chellum, head of the Mauritius Consumers Association (ACIM), also highlighted ongoing illegal re-sales.
Suttyhudeo Tengur, president of the Association for the Protection of Environment and Consumers (APEC), suggests using digital tools to better monitor distribution and prevent abuse.
