Mauritius Government Allocates Land for New Alzheimer Care Center

The government has allocated a land lease to the Alzheimer & Dementia Mauritius Association in La Vigie. The land, provided by the Ministry of Housing and Lands, will allow the association to build a new center with necessary facilities, according to Minister Shakeel Mohamed. He announced this during the signing of the lease agreement at his office yesterday.

Minister Mohamed also visited the current association building in Belle-Rose. He stated that the new center will be able to accommodate more people.

He also called on civil society and businesses to contribute financially to support the project.

Dr. Ameenah Sorefan, President of the Alzheimer & Dementia Mauritius Association, explained that the current center offers daytime care services for people with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

She said the center provides activities, meals, and leisure options to ensure patients have a good day before returning to their families in the evening.

The goal of the new center is to create a space for sharing and positive experiences. Dr. Sorefan highlighted that with an aging population, about 2 to 3 percent of people aged 60 to 80 suffer from dementia.

She emphasized that patients need not only medical support but also psychosocial assistance to maintain their independence. The association aims to contribute to these needs.
