Government Promises Free Public Transport for All by 2025
On July 24th, in Balaclava, Transport Minister Osman Mahomed announced serious plans to fulfill a key election promise: free public transport for all. During a meeting with bus operators, he emphasized the government’s commitment, saying, “We mean business.”
The bus sector, despite receiving around 2.5 billion rupees in annual subsidies, still faces significant problems.
Buses are old and poorly maintained, delays are frequent, and service quality is often criticized.
To address these issues, the government is preparing major reforms, including the upcoming Bus Services Bill.
This legislation will introduce a Fleet Management System with GPS tracking, contactless payments, and stricter rules for operators and drivers.
Most importantly, the government’s flagship promise is to implement free public transport for everyone.
Minister Mahomed assured he aims to make this happen as soon as possible, fulfilling a key part of the electoral program.
Additionally, Social Security Minister Ashok Subron highlighted the importance of this measure.
He stressed that a balanced, integrated, and eco-friendly transportation system is essential to combat chaos, traffic congestion, and sector abuse.
